A27 ALARM was formed way back in the late 70's by John Hughes and a group of local residents living close to the route of the Worthing – Lancing A27 when they heard
it was to have a major upgrade as part of a future £15 billion transport infrastructure programme.
That small residents group had grown to hundreds by the mid 80’s along the 6 mile stretch from Cote Street Worthing to past Lancing, when a draft plan was published. It was then realised such a major upgrade to the road could mean the loss of hundreds homes along much of that length.
Clearly, even if it was not your home facing demolition, blight and falling houses prices could descend on much of the area due to the uncertainty by how much the already heavy traffic and pollution will increase. Then there would be so much upheaval caused by the massive engineering work.
Businesses were also concerned because if major work does go ahead there is a strong possibility the road might have to be closed so as to complete the works sooner – leading some to predict A27 traffic would have to be diverted through other parts of Worthing and Lancing while it was done.
All this has led to calls for a northern bypass option to be considered. However generations had campaigned for the South Downs to be protected from development, finally being rewarded with this iconic area receiving National Park status in 2011 and the strongest protection from any development.
